How Often Should You Really Clean the Fridge

The refrigerator is one of the few appliances running every hour of every day, yet it tends to be cleaned only when something spills or starts to smell. Because it stores the food you eat, it deserves a more regular rhythm than most people give it. The key is matching the right task to the right interval so the job never becomes a major undertaking.

The Quick Weekly Pass

Once a week, take a few minutes to check for items that have gone off and wipe up any new spills before they harden. This is also the moment to plan around what needs using up soon. A weekly glance keeps odors from ever taking hold and stops you from buying duplicates of things hiding at the back.

The Deeper Monthly Clean

About once a month, give the interior a proper wash:

  • Remove the food and take out the shelves and drawers
  • Wash the removable parts in warm soapy water and let them dry fully
  • Wipe the interior walls with a solution of warm water and a little baking soda
  • Clean the door seals, where crumbs and mold love to gather

Let everything come back to room temperature before washing, since cold glass can crack under hot water.

Seasonal and Behind-the-Scenes Care

A couple of times a year, pull the fridge out and vacuum the condenser coils at the back or bottom. Dusty coils make the appliance work harder and shorten its life. Wipe down the exterior and the top, which collects a surprising amount of grime. With this layered approach, your fridge stays fresh, runs efficiently, and never demands one of those dreaded hours-long rescues.
